CAMPUS SUMMARY
The Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts has a truly unique mission. The Lyme Academy is the only independent Fine Art College in New England, and one of three degree-granting institutions in the nation exclusively dedicated to traditional art disciplines. The Lyme Academy provides a classical and formal education in the principles, history, techniques, and critical thought processes that have shaped our society from the Renaissance to the present.
The Lyme Academy was founded in 1976 by sculptor Elizabeth Chandler and others dedicated to the belief that serious fine artists must study the classical traditions of painting and sculpture - studies that produced the great master artists from Michelangelo to Picasso. The Lyme Academy embraces these disciplines in a rigorous curriculum that places special emphasis on life drawing and anatomy.
Serious students from across the country seek the Lyme Academy for the education offered. They recognize that their professional future will depend on their learning the fundamental and basic skills of drawing, painting and sculpture.
The Lyme Academy offers opportunities for foreign study at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland; work-study in local schools; and volunteer work for local arts groups. The seven-week summer program includes two one-week intensive workshops and a five-week session with a variety of traditional offerings.
Lyme Academy is only two hours away each from cultural opportunities in New York City and Boston. Museums in close proximity to Lyme Academy can be found in Connecticut (Hartford, New Haven, and the southeast portion of the state) and in Providence, Rhode Island.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
The Lyme Academy offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and a three-year certificate in Painting or Sculpture. These programs are supported by required study in Anatomy and Life Drawing. First year students take a beginning course in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Beginning Design and Composition and the Liberal Arts & Sciences of English and Art History Survey. A comprehensive portfolio review at the end of the freshman year helps students determine their major. Sophomore studies focus on either painting or sculpture and introduce the study of anatomy and life drawing. Students are also required to continue with intermediate and advanced composition classes through graduation.
We believe that to find your own contemporary voice and style, you need a solid foundation in classical, tough to learn fundamentals. We seek to educate and train contemporary artists who give new voice and vision with confidence because they have learned how to walk before they tried to run.
The Lyme Academy is a small college and we intend to remain so to assure maximum individual attention and support to our students.
